It was formed on 10 August 2020 by a government order of former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. On 31 December 2022, the district was remerged with existing Barpeta district. And again On 25 August, 2023 Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the decision to recreate the merged district of Bajali from its original districts.
