You go pretty quick - and you can hurt or scrape yourself if you come off - so best to have some form of wet suit - but plenty of kids fly down without a problem. I only did it as i had a wetsuit on. The bigger issue at present is the water quality- with the ow rainfall and hot temperatures the water quality is considered a health risk so I believe it is actually considered "closed". The Gisborne District Council tests it weekly and posts it's results on the GDC Website - can't post the link as TripAdvisor won't let me.
Is knowing how to swim mandatory for this activity? I am not a swimmer but not afraid of water. Will I be okay with a life jacket?

you should be fine, the water at the end was above my head (1.67m) but not by much & it is not a very big pool, so you can dog paddle over to the edge.
