The U.S.-brokered cease-fire is set to take effect Wednesday morning in Israel and Lebanon, ending more than a year of fighting tied to the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip. President Joe Biden said his team would continue to push for an end to fighting in Gaza.

Israel approved a cease-fire with Lebanon that is intended to bring a halt to more than a year of fighting with the Hezbollah militia and could help defuse a broader regional crisis that has threatened to ensnare the U.

Israel launched an offensive in Lebanon in mid-September following months of tit-for-tat border attacks sparked by Hamas' Oct. 7 attack.

Israeli ministers endorsed a truce that still needs formal approval in Lebanon. It followed an intense barrage of Israeli strikes in and near Beirut.

President Joe Biden on Tuesday touted a cease-fire deal between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah after more than a year of fighting between the two sides. In the Rose Garden, Biden said he’d spoken with the leaders of Lebanon and Israel this afternoon and that both governments agreed to the cease-fire beginning at 4 a.
