The No. 14 Rutgers University wrestling team defeated a top-10 team for the first time in six years and did so in thrilling fashion on Sunday, beating No. 10 Illinois, 16-15, in a barnburner at Jersey Mike’s Arena.

The Nittany Lions (9-0) scored four technicals, including the 11th this season by top-ranked Mitchell Mesenbrink (165 pounds). Redshirt freshman Josh Barr (197) produced the signature win, scoring seven (!) takedowns in the third period for a 22-6 win. Barr scored six more takedowns in the third than Rutgers (one) did the entire match.

Friday night’s wrestling match between Penn State and Rutgers marked the 26th time the teams have squared off. In the previous 25 meetings the Nittany Lions were the victors, and it remained that way after everything was settled in Piscataway,

The Penn State wrestling team (9-0, 3-0 Big Ten) downed homestanding Rutgers (10-4, 2-2) 35-3 in Big Ten action Friday.

The No. 1 Penn State wrestling team visits Rutgers on Friday night for another top-25 Big Ten match. The unbeaten Nittany Lions bring a 64-match win streak to Piscataway, where the No. 25 Scarlet Knights await. The road trip is Penn State's last before a pair of big home matches next week at the Bryce Jordan Center.
