EAST LANSING — The Michigan State University Board of Trustees formally approved the hiring of Pat Fitzgerald during its Dec. 12 meeting. Fitzgerald, who was Northwestern football coach from 2006-23, was announced as the next Spartan coach on Monday, Dec. 1. The board's vote finalizes the process.

New Michigan State University head football coach Pat Fitzgerald will make a minimum of $30 million over the life of his five-year contract, but he has the opportunity to extend it to $54 million over eight years if he hits certain goals.

MSU's OC position is the one that looms the largest, though, since it remains open more than two weeks after Fitzgerald took the job and because Fitzgerald is a defensive-minded coach. The Spartans' offense has been stagnant for a while, and that needs to change for this program to finally win some games.
