LEAVENWORTH, Wash. — Leavenworth is getting back up and running after the winter storms caused some very close calls. The massive tree that once stood proudly in Michelle Luders' front yard, for example, came crashing down onto her home last week.

Leavenworth — a charming Bavarian-style village tucked into the foothills of the north-central Washington Cascades — has long been heralded as one of the region’s most charming getaways. Thousands pack the streets each fall for Oktoberfest, and the town, with its dazzling light displays, is also home to a host of beloved Christmastime traditions.

The Wenatchee River has peaked to more than 16 feet, causing flooding in Leavenworth and Cashmere. The rising waters left around 5,000 homes without power this afternoon.

Several days of driving rain this week compounded by powerful winds on Wednesday toppled thousands of trees and knocked out power throughout Leavenworth just as the holiday season enters full swing. Given the scale of the damage,

The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) says a section of US Highway 2 has washed out into the Wenatchee River.
