Two states and the largest cities within them had nearly opposite reactions after President Trump reiterated his plans to withhold all federal funds from areas in the country that have policies limiting local law enforcement cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

President Trump said Thursday he is 'working on papers" to withhold federal funding to U.S. sanctuary cities, including Chicago.

Mayor Brandon Johnson's office has said the city is in line for $3.5 billion in new and existing federal grants this year. In a statement responding to Trump’s latest barb, Johnson’s office said “the City of Chicago complies with all federal and state laws.
