Interim Dallas police Chief Michael Igo on Thursday asserted that his officers will help federal authorities arrest anyone wanted for a crime, clarifying a viral remark he made about immigration enforcement after receiving national criticism.

Chief Michael Igo says Dallas police officers will not stop or contact any person for the sole purpose of determining their immigration status.

Igo said officers can’t “stop or contact any person for the sole purpose of determining immigration status,” per department policy.

During a news conference, the chief reaffirmed the department's commitment to representing and protecting all community members.
