Officials with the SUNY system are expected to appoint an interim leader for Stony Brook University in a timely manner, but the search for a permanent new president will probably take months.

The “Top 10% Promise Program” has been billed as a way to simultaneously boost diversity after the end of affirmative action and keep talent in state.

The other 60 SUNY campuses would be able to raise their in-state student tuition up to 3% — tied to the Higher Education Price Index. Tuition has already been raised for out-of-state students.

If Stony Brook can bring in more federal research dollars, it could raise the profile of the SUNY system overall and spur economic development to boot, said John King, the SUNY chancellor.
