Jerod Mayo offered a peek into what’s been going on with the Patriots’ quarterbacks at practice when he spoke with reporters on Friday. In that peek, the Patriots coach also confirmed that Drake Maye has received 30 percent of the reps with the starting unit in practice since the preseason began.

Jacoby Brissett may be the Patriots’ QB1, but he’s not getting all the starting reps in practice. New England head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed to reporters on Friday that rookie Drake Maye has been getting an unusual amount of first-team snaps in practice for a backup.

They know they need to develop him, and Alex Van Pelt said there are opportunities for him to learn in meeting rooms, on the practice field, at home, and on the sideline.

Brissett was 15-of-25 for 121 yards with seven carries for 32 yards in the Patriots’ Week 1 win over the Bengals. Maye outperformed Brissett in the preseason, finishing the summer 21-of-34 for 192 yards with a passing touchdown. He also carried the ball seven times for 32 yards with a rushing touchdown.
