The Minnesota Vikings are signing Wentz to back up quarterback J.J. McCarthy and trading Howell to the Eagles, two people with knowledge of the decisions told The Associated Press on Sunday. Both people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the teams haven’t announced the moves. ESPN first reported the deals.

After the season, Howell was traded to the Seattle Seahawks to serve as Geno Smith's backup. He got into two games and went 5-for-14 passing for 24 yards. Howell was then traded to the Vikings to serve as J.J. McCarthy's backup in April.
