Chicago’s city council voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to allow the police superintendent to renew the city’s ShotSpotter contract in a last-ditch effort to keep the gunshot-detection technology that far-left mayor Brandon Johnson remains committed to getting rid of.

"The mayor referenced the veto because the thing that passed is in violation of the Separation of Powers Act," Chicago Corporation Counsel Mary Richardson-Lowry said at the same press conference. "The legislative branch cannot compel the executive branch to act, hence the item is a vetoable item and the mayor is going to exercise that privilege."

The City Council again rebuked Mayor Brandon Johnson’s plan to rid Chicago of ShotSpotter Wednesday, voting to keep the gunshot detection technology around just days before it was set to go offline. Aldermen passed in a 33-to-14 vote an ordinance supporters say would compel police Superintendent Larry Snelling to reach a contract to continue using the tool.
