Greenland’s legislature debated whether to prohibit political parties from receiving contributions “from foreign or anonymous contributors” after President Donald Trump laid out ambitions for the United States to take over the vast island that belongs to Denmark.

The bill is aimed at protecting "Greenland's political integrity" and will take effect immediately, according to a translation of a parliamentary document in Danish outlining the measure.

Greenland's ruling Siumut party plans to hold a vote on independence following a general election next month, it said on Thursday, an issue made urgent by U.S. President Donald Trump's expressed interest in acquiring the island.

The process of Greenland gaining independence from Denmark needs to be accelerated, particularly regarding the organization of a referendum, said Erik Jensen, the leader of the ruling Siumut party, in an interview with DR.
