For some two hundred years from the mid-7th century onwards it was the dominant member of the Heptarchy and consequently the most powerful of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms. During this period its rulers became the first English monarchs to assume such wide-ranging titles as King of Britain and King of the English.

Philip Mercier was born in Berlin, of French extraction, and moved to London in 1716. He had been recommended to King George I by the King's family in Hanover, perhaps by Frederick, Prince of Wales, to whom Mercier became Principal Painter when the prince and his family came to England in 1729.

Louis Mercier was born about 1610, in Charente-Maritime, France. He married Anne Bastarde before 31 December 1639, in France. They were the parents of at least 2 daughters. He died in 1640, at the age of 31.
