The San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge, commonly referred to as the Bay Bridge, is a complex of bridges spanning San Francisco Bay in California. As part of Interstate 80 and the direct road between San Francisco and Oakland, it carries about 260,000 vehicles a day on its two decks.

Enough Bay Area residents want to experience the new Bay Bridge firsthand that attendance at the opening ceremony is so large it creates “the greatest traffic jam in the history of San Francisco,” according to the San Francisco Chronicle. Construction of the bridge – really two bridges — begins July 9, 1933.

The opening of the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge on Labor Day 2013 marked the symbolic end of a long and challenging journey. A fleet of California police officers on motorcycles led the first official crossing of the new Bay Bridge.

When the Golden Gate Bridge opened on May 27, 1937, the celebration lasted a week. The day before, 200,000 people walked, ran, and even roller skated across the bridge. On opening day, San Francisco official boarded the ferry that would carry them to Sausalito. They formed a motorcade that faced three barriers.

But until the 1930s, building this bridge was thought impossible – it is an 8-mile long span crossing waters that were very deep and had swift currents, and there was a noticeable lack of stable bedrock upon which to build.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge is made up of two bridge segments: a skyway structure/single anchored suspension bridge between Oakland and Yerba Buena Island, and a suspension span from the island to San Francisco. Connecting the two is the largest diameter bore tunnel in the world.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, one of the most famous bridges in the world and the key transportation link in the Bay Area, was built under the New Deal with funding from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation (RFC).
