The newly formed Kentucky-based choir Artefact Ensemble, led by Benedict Sheehan, performs "O Gladsome Light" (Φῶς Ἱλαρόν; "Lumen Hilare"), one of the oldest Christian hymns still in common use, dating from the late third century. Sheehan’s setting is based on Byzantine chant, with the chant being sung by a soprano soloist (Fotina Naumenko) in order to suggest, he says, that it is the Virgin Mary who is singing this hymn to Christ.
