Belugas are often talked about as part of the Arctic food web, including being prey for polar bears, but I like to photograph them from a different perspective. To me, they feel more like playful neighbors, swimming together, interacting, and clearly enjoying each other’s company. Belugas are highly social whales, traveling in pods and constantly communicating through whistles, clicks, and chirps, which is why they’re known as the “sea canaries” of the Arctic. They’re born grey and gradually tur

100+ belugas! Definite highlight of our time in Svalbard for me. This large group of beluga whales had gathered at the ice edge to feed. We were checking out a glacier when we first saw one or two.. then suddenly maybe 20 or 30.. and more and more! I counted about 100 in one of the aerial shots, and an unknown number were deeper down or under the ice at the same time 😮😮. They were feasting on something, but I'm not sure what. It was a completely different experience to when we met the tame bel

Baby belugas in the not so deep blue sea. As they move through the shallows, they stir up the ocean floor and leave behind beautiful painted trails. These shallow waters offer them some sense of safety from orcas, but they also make them vulnerable to other predators, like polar bears. . . . #WildlifePhotography #CanadianArctic #ArcticWildlife #Nature #IntoTheWild #pelican #ExpeditionLife #EcoTourism #WildEncounters #nikon #ArcticExpedition #ExploreCanada #33daysamongthebears #arctic #earthcaptu

A beautiful pod of beluga whales swimming along the coastline in Canada's Arctic. Beluga whales are adapted for life in the Arctic. Amongst these are its all-white colour and the absence of a dorsal fin, which allows it to swim under ice with ease. It possesses a distinctive large bump at the front of its head, which houses an echolocation organ called the melon. Its sense of hearing is highly developed, and its echolocation allows it to move about and find breathing holes under the ice. A highl

Do you know why Arctic locals never swim near beluga hunting grounds? Generations of Indigenous hunters have learned that belugas, while not aggressive predators, can be territorial and unpredictable during feeding. In these moments, they may charge boats, bump into people, or thrash the water to scare off perceived threats. In rare cases, they’ve even overturned small kayaks. The combination of ice, cold water, and a one-ton marine mammal reacting suddenly can turn deadly fast. Respecting their

Back in 2016, a lone narwhal showed up in the St. Lawrence River swimming with a pod of young male beluga whales. He was a long way from home. Narwhals typically live in the Arctic Ocean, but this one had somehow gotten separated from his family and drifted south. The belugas took him in. Just like that. Scientists say he's healthy and behaving like one of the boys. And now that the whole bachelor pod has reached maturity, they'll soon be looking for a female beluga pod to mate with. Which raise

Forrest Galante on Instagram: "At first glance, this looks wild a polar bear swimming through open water, surrounded by beluga whales. But here’s what’s really going on. Polar bears are apex predators of the Arctic, and yes, they do hunt belugas but almost always as ambush predators from the ice. In open water, it’s a totally different story. Polar bears aren’t built for chasing. They’re powerful, but when swimming they’re actually pretty awkward compared to a nimble, fast beluga. And the beluga
