Robert Schumann composed his Three Romances, Op. 94 in December 1849 as a Christmas gift for his wife Clara. Originally written for violin or oboe and piano, the set comes from an exceptionally prolific year for Schumann in Dresden, in which he composed an outpouring of chamber and wind works.
