On this day—January 4, 1881—Johannes Brahms conducted the premiere of his Academic Festival Overture. Brahms composed the work during the summer of 1880 as a tribute to the University of Breslau, which had announced its intention to award him an honorary doctorate in music. The premiere took place at a special university convocation, during which Brahms formally received the honorary degree.
