Northern Red Salamander (Pseudotriton ruber ruber) Meet the Red Salamander, also known as the “spring lizard.” This bright orange red amphibian with bold black spots lives around cool spring fed streams and forest pools from the Appalachians down into Mississippi. It can grow up to 18 cm long and is often confused with the Mud Salamander, but stands out with its golden eyes and heavier spotting. Most of the time it stays hidden under logs, rocks, or leaf litter and can even burrow underground ne
